Counselor for MSK Trainees Maintaining mental health is critical to optimal wellbeing, not to mention crucial for being able to focus in the lab and clinic. However, this aspect of health is often neglected. No doubt the trainee period is a high stress time in life, and MSK is committed to ensuring that you have rapid access to high-quality services that support your mental and emotional wellbeing. To that end, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Penni Morganstein, a therapist who will provide free, confidential virtual counseling services exclusively to MSK graduate students, postdocs, and GME fellows.
Introducing Penni Morganstein Penni Morganstein earned her Clinical-school Psychology PsyD from Pace University, a master’s in Education from Hunter College, was a Fellow at the Institute for Educational Leadership at New York University and serves as Adjunct Supervisor of Psychology Doctoral Candidates at Pace University. Her integrative therapeutic approach, based on years of therapeutic experience, combines psychodynamic, insight-oriented, mindfulness, and Behavioral Therapy (CBT and DBT) theories, designed to suit each patient’s diagnosis and individual needs.
Penni has experience working in university (undergraduate and graduate) settings, hospitals, and private practice. Her areas of expertise and specialization include, but are not limited to, depression, generalized and social anxiety and panic attacks. Dr. Morganstein also has experience with parenting and relationship issues, as well as life transitions. She has helped patients adjust to relocation to and from NYC, separation & divorce, career changes, returning to work or school after a hiatus, improve time and stress management skills, and tap into creativity. She provides an open minded, culturally sensitive environment and attracts individuals of diverse backgrounds, who hail from across the United States and all over the world.

Additional support You and members of your household continue to have access to short-term (up to six sessions) counseling and coaching services with through Magellan EAP. Licensed counselors are available 24/7/365 to meet with you in person or virtually (via asynchronous text, live chat, video & phone). Furthermore, the OPA has posted updated flyers on all research floors which list additional resources available to you if you would like to seek advice and counsel, whether faith-based or internal & external to MSK.

VIRTUAL THERAPY Magellan has partnered with Betterhelp to expand the range of virtual therapy options available to you!
Betterhelp is a convenient and confidential service that gives you the option to meet with a counselor using text message, phone, chat and/or video conference. All you need is a phone or computer with a webcam and high-speed internet access. With BetterHelp's expanded range of virtual services, you can be matched, typically within 24 hours, with one of over 10,000 licensed therapists and enjoy faster access to health services. Counselors offer online appointment scheduling and flexible times, including evening and weekends, so you can make an appointment for a time that is right for you. With BetterHelp, use one of four modalities to connect with a therapist based on your unique needs:
You can also switch between modalities while in therapy. For example, you can choose to schedule a live chat session with a therapist one week and a phone session for the following week.

A clinician will work to understand your personal needs and if appropriate refer you to BetterHelp. A referral form with a unique link will be generated and sent to you via email. Once you have completed the questionnaire, you will be matched with a provider. Typically, you can begin communicating with a provider within 24 hours of completing the questionnaire.

The OSET team will provide assistance with issues related to conflict resolution, work life balance and career exploration. While our team is not equipped with the tools to provide mental health counseling we are committed keep confidentiality of the issues discussed with us and will provide advice to navigate the resources available for the particular issue. MSK’s Postdoc Association (PDA): pda@mskcc.org The PDA is a postdoc led group that works closely with OPA to represents the interests of Research Fellows, Research Scholars, and Research Associates to the MSK faculty and administration. Chaplaincy: Our chaplaincy Services offer spiritual care to address questions of identiy, meaning, purpose, value and worth-that may or may not be expressed in religious terms. Our board-certified chaplains work closesly with the interdisciplinary care teams on each floor of the hospital. To arrange for a visit from one of our chaplains, or froma lcocal clergy from a Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, or Jewish congregation, please contact: 212-639-5982.
HR Business Partners: provide guidance on HR issues to divisional leaders; investigate employee issues in the workplace; identify workforce training and development needs; and work with their HR colleagues to support delivery of a wide range of HR services. Each area of MSK is represented by its own Business Partner who is familiar with that area's issues and priorities. Personal Provider: A personal physician, psychiatrist or other mental health counselor can provide professional help for mental health issues. These can be accessed through your benefits plan. Schwartz Rounds: MSK's Schwartz Center Rounds, a program bringing doctors, nurses and other caregivers together to discuss the human side of healthcare. These rounds provide a safe, confidential environment to discuss case-based experiences, thoughts and feelings and to build communication and working relationships across disciplines. Social Work: The MSK Social Work department provides staff support groups to help them manage the stress of their work, including nurses, personal care technicians, evnironmental staff, physician office assistants, session asssitants and others. To arrange a workshop for your department, please call 212-639-7020 to speak with the social worker assigned to your department.
Staff Support Response Team (SSRT): The SSRT will provide counseling, debriefing and group support for staff after a sentinel or other event with the potential of resulting in mild or severe distress. The SSRT is a multi-disciplinary program comprised of clinicians trained to provide crisis intervention and timely support to staff after a distressing workplace event. To contact the SSRT, call the Department of Social work at 212-693-7020 and request an SSRT consult. After business hours and on weekends, call the page operator at 212-639-7900 and ask for Social Worker on call.
Specialists under your health insurance providers: Your MSK insurance covers services of mental health specialists for the primary insurance holder as well your eligible dependents. Located at: 40 West. 13th, New York, NY, 10011 As the clinical component of the the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis Training Institute, they provide referrals and related training experiences for NPAP candidates and help individuals in the NYC and surrounding counties identify affordable psychotherapy ($40+). Initially they meet with the individual and identify their schedule, insurance and preference for a counseling professional. In addition, they will also take all the financial information of the individual seeking help and if they can’t afford therapy, they will help them found resources to fund it. |
