F and K Awards Demystified: Strategies for Biomedical Career Success is a two-day virtual outreach event hosted by the Office of Research Training and Special Programs (ORTSP), Division of Extramural Activities (DEA), at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), on September 16–17, 2026 from 10am-2pm EST on each day. Designed for early-career investigators, the program provides practical guidance on preparing competitive F and K award applications through sessions on the application and peer review processes, NIAID research priorities, proposal development tips, and NIH funding resources. Participants will hear from NIAID program staff and Scientific Review Officers from the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) and will have opportunities to engage with experts during the Q and A sessions. About the Leon Levy Scholarships in Neuroscience

The Scholarships aim to promote groundbreaking neuroscience research in the five boroughs of New York City by supporting the most innovative young researchers at a critical stage of their careers—their postdoctoral research—as they develop new ideas and directions that will help establish them as independent neuroscientists.


Each Scholarship is a three (3)-year award. Scholars will receive an annual stipend equal to 125% of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) postdoctoral rate, according to postdoctoral year, a $2,000 one-time tech and travel allowance, and a need-based annual dependent care supplement, among other benefits. They will participate in regular scholar meetings, an annual symposium, an alumni network, and they will receive professional development including individual training for grant writing.

I would like to share a postdoctoral opportunity that may be of interest to members of our research community or colleagues within their professional networks.
Dr. Dario Rodrigues, Associate Professor and Hyperthermia Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, recently reached out to me regarding an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Medical Image Segmentation and Multiphysics Modeling for MR-Guided Brain Hyperthermia.
The position is a full-time, three-year postdoctoral appointment associated with an NIH-funded project focused on developing a non-invasive, MR-compatible hyperthermia system for brain tumor treatment. The fellow will work in areas including medical image segmentation, development of high-resolution patient-specific anatomical models from CT and MRI, computational medical imaging, mesh generation and optimization, and multiphysics modeling of electromagnetic energy deposition and bioheat transfer.
The opportunity may be particularly relevant to candidates with backgrounds in medical physics, medical informatics, biomedical engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering, computer science, applied physics, applied mathematics, or related disciplines. Experience with medical image segmentation and 3D anatomical modeling is required. Experience with deep-learning-based segmentation, DICOM, image registration, COMSOL or other multiphysics platforms, finite-element modeling, high-performance computing, and GPU-based computation would be advantageous.

Position Summary
The Ryu Lab in the Department of Cell Biology at UT Southwestern is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow.
Our research focuses on how metabolic pathways are organized across molecular, organellar, and cellular scales. We are particularly interested in how enzyme clustering, mitochondrial heterogeneity, and inter-organelle interactions control metabolic flux and support cellular adaptation in physiological and disease contexts, including cancer.

Research Areas
Projects in the lab broadly address:
• Regulation of metabolic flux through enzyme clustering and filament formation
• Functional heterogeneity of mitochondria and subcellular metabolic specialization
• Organelle interactions (e.g., ER–mitochondria contacts) in metabolic control
• The role of mitochondrial DNA variation in metabolic adaptation and tumor progression
The lab integrates advanced live-cell imaging, biochemical approaches, and metabolic flux analysis, with opportunities to incorporate structural biology (cryo-EM), proteomics, and computational analysis.

Qualifications
• PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, metabolism, or related field
• Motivated and productive individual interested in pursuing a career in the field of cell biology, biochemistry, and metabolism.

About The PI
Keun received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the laboratory of W. Lee Kraus, where he studied how NAD? metabolism regulates transcription during cell differentiation. He then completed postdoctoral training with Craig Thompson at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he discovered that cells can generate metabolically distinct mitochondrial subpopulations through higher-order enzyme assembly and mitochondrial fusion and fission dynamics, enabling the coordination of competing metabolic pathways. During his training, he was a Hunter Douglas Breast Cancer Research Fellow and received the Basic Research Innovation Award and the Tri-Institutional Breakout Prize.
In 2025, he joined the Department of Cell Biology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. His laboratory investigates how cellular metabolism is organized by uncovering the principles by which enzyme self-assembly and organelle interactions spatially control intracellular metabolism.
